New Site Rolling Out.

by cishanjia @ 2007-12-11 - 19:49:28

I am now rolling out the improved site. I expect this be done by the new year. Some of the changes you may not notice. These include correcting errors in accessibility. For example, the "skip to content" links did not work.

Some changes will be obvious. These include the new format and locations of pages in the main parish catalogue. I will now only add items to the general catalogue that are not in the Norfolk Heritage Explorer one.

I list problems I know about here: knownissues.shtml.

Major Catalogue Source Found!

by cishanjia @ 2007-12-10 - 10:11:20

Great news! After a long search I have found the Golden Fleece. In this case, it's the Norfolk Heritage Explorer by Norfolk County Council. This hidden gem catalogues pretty much all Norfolk's archaeological sites and finds. This means I no longer have the impossible task of compiling my own! So, instead I will only now catalogue sites and finds I know of not on the county's catalogue. I will add links to it instead, from each parish page.

I apologise for the delays in finishing the review. But the search paid off. This means I will be able to concentrate on expanding coverage across Norfolk. This is what I originally intended.

Great things are about to happen in 2008! Watch this space...

Three Month Review Nearly Done.

by cishanjia @ 2007-11-28 - 18:33:52

I have nearly completed the main part of this Three Month Review. I will then move to a Six Month Review. Please note the following changes to come:

  • This home page will change from "index.html" to "index.shtml". If you go to the current page, it will automatically redirect you. I am doing this, to keep all page names consistent.
  • I have abandoned my plan to use only words from the Longman's Defining Dictionary. This simply isn't practical.
  • I am making sure pages conform to the WCAG 'AA' accessibility standard. As far as possible all should conform to the higher 'AAA' standard. But I can't guarantee this.
  • I am working through the pages, to make sure the style of writing meets a PG/13 audience level.
  • I will also be adding a glossary for technical terms.

When I have done these changes, I will adding some new entries to the existing parishes. After that, I will start adding more parishes.

A Welcome.

by cishanjia @ 2007-11-21 - 18:28:13

Welcome to the Ancient Norfolk blog.

Here I post changes to the Ancient Norfolk website. Web: http://www.ancientnorfolk.co.uk

On the website, you will find a slowly growing catalogue of archaeological finds in Norfolk, England. The period I cover is from the Old Stone Age through to the end of the Anglo-Saxon and Viking period. You will also find a growing list of discussions.

You can use the RSS feature of this blog to keep up-to-date with changes.

Bacton Parish Catalogue Entry Completed

by cishanjia @ 2007-11-05 - 17:50:51

The catalogue entries for Bacton parish are now complete, on the basis of the information I have. If a site or find is not currently included in the catalogue for this parish, then it is because it is unknown to me.

I am now starting the second Three Month Review. Please see the entry below dated Sunday 28th October 2007 for details.

Advance Notice: Three Month Review

by cishanjia @ 2007-10-28 - 19:21:50

Just a quick note to remind you that the second Three Month Review is coming up. I aim to carry that out, once I have completed the Bacton Parish entry. In this Review, I aim to:-

  1. Correct a minor accessibility issue affecting all pages, which, although minor, will take a little time. Doing this will mean that most pages will meet the "AAA" accessibility standard as I originally intended;
  2. Alter the stylesheet to change certain features such as typeface, or font, and background colours to improve accessibility. Although this is a quick and cosmetic change, it should improve readability for any visitor with visual impairment. Initially, I aim to apply this to a test page, for feedback;
  3. Locate and install a site search facility. Initially, I aim to apply this to a test page, for feedback and to meet the privacy policy of providing advanced notice to changes affecting that policy, since any free search facility is likely to apply third party host cookies. Moving this to the home page, or to every page in a sidebar, will entail writing and uploading instructions on how to remove unwanted cookies on the most popular browsers, or else finding links to such information.

Once I have completed this Three Month Review, I will move to Six Month Reviews.

by cishanjia @ 2007-09-28 - 16:59:33

The catalogue entries for Paston parish are now complete, on the basis of the information I have. If a site or find is not currently included in the catalogue for this parish, then it is because it is unknown to me.

Today's Updates

by cishanjia @ 2007-09-26 - 16:30:29

I have amended this site's accessibility policy and privacy policy pages to note that the policies for [that] site cannot be extended to [this] blog associated with it, because of restrictions placed by the host of [this] service.

I have also further amended the detailed entry for AN-5 to include all the newer observations, as well as to bring the entry more in line with this site's accessibility policy.

Further Update to Roman Road AN-5

by cishanjia @ 2007-09-25 - 19:31:58

I have made a few more amendments to the record for conjectural Roman Road, AN-5 "Crossdale Street", having further examined the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey Map.
