References Added to Study

by cishanjia @ 2007-08-30 - 16:17:00

I have now included the references used in compiling A Pilot Statistical Study of Potential Roman Sites by Place Names, which I neglected to do yesterday before uploading.

Pilot Statistical Study Completed and Uploaded

by cishanjia @ 2007-08-29 - 16:45:40

I have now completed the reworking of the original 2003-4 study of place names and Roman roads, and have uploaded the results in A Pilot Statistical Study of Potential Roman Sites by Place Names I have also now included links to the source data.

Swafield Parish Catalogue Entry Completed

by cishanjia @ 2007-08-27 - 16:10:08

The catalogue entries for Swafield parish are now complete, on the basis of the information I have. If a site or find is not currently included in the catalogue for this parish, then it is because it is unknown to me.

I have amended the cascading stylesheet for the site, to correct a problem with the preferred font for titles, American Unciale, in the Safari browser. Computers with the font installed did not display the titles at all. I have changed the preferred font to Arial, and have also changed the titles to Regular, rather than Italic, lettering for accessibility and clarity.

Corrections Pending on A Statistical Study on Potential Roman Sites by Place Names

by cishanjia @ 2007-08-19 - 17:52:28

After reviewing the original study in A Statistical Study of Potential Roman Sites by Place Names, I have concluded that there are two errors. I have updated the original report to note this. I will rewrite the report within the next fortnight or so to correct this, and upload it. A full summary of the problems with the current version are stated clearly at the start of the introduction.

Started on Swafield Finds

by cishanjia @ 2007-08-16 - 17:04:06

I have started adding the finds in Swafield parish.

North Walsham Parish Catalogue Entry Completed

by cishanjia @ 2007-08-15 - 15:33:54

The catalogue entries for North Walsham parish are now complete, on the basis of the information I have. If a site or find is not currently included in the catalogue for this parish, then it is because it is unknown to me.

More Content Being Added

by cishanjia @ 2007-08-13 - 16:49:54

I have added named water sources to the existing parish entries. I have also now begun two rolling programmes. The first places a light border around detailed catalogue entries, mainly in the Parish Catalogue and Type Catalogue, which should help visually in distinguishing individual entries. I have also now begun adding summaries of individual finds from the Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service website. Each entry's corresponding catalogue number is recorded, and you'll find a link to the website in the Secondary Sources' section for each parish, and from the secondary sources page. Or here: http://www.museums.norfolk.gov.uk/

ready to add finds next week

by cishanjia @ 2007-08-05 - 18:49:56

Ready for adding a large number of finds in the existing parishes when I return the week after next, I have divided the Parish Catalogue's individual parish entries into separate sections for sites and finds, as well as adding a few more details to each. I have similarly divided the "site type catalogue", and renamed it simply the "Type Catalogue". This will make it easier to distinguish larger-scale sites from smaller-scale finds once the finds get populated.

It will make sense, once I get going!

Once I have added the known finds to each existing parish, I will then be able to go about the task of adding more parishes as I go. Watch this space!

Admin Changes now Completed

by cishanjia @ 2007-08-04 - 13:40:26

I'm pleased to say that the necessary admin changes have all now been completed. This paves the way for me to add new content. The changes were necessary to answer problems, suggestions and criticisms. I thank you for your feedback on the site, and for your patience.

Changes to Secondary Sources; Ratings Added

by cishanjia @ 2007-08-03 - 19:58:40

I have amended the secondary sources on the Ancient Norfolk website to include a number of tertiary sources that are frequently referenced. I have also downgraded the Collins Dictionary of First Names to a tertiary source, since it fails to meet strict criteria.

I have also now added the ratings' graphics to every main entry in the catalogue.

Three Months' Review Complete

by cishanjia @ 2007-08-02 - 17:58:35

I have now completed the three months review. Please note that the two maps uploaded to the Ancient Norfolk website so far have now been moved to the maps/ folder from the parishes/ one. This has effectively created a maps' catalogue, which I have also added to the Quick Links column on each page.

I have also downgraded Roman road AN-5, "Crossdale Street", to "conjectural" status in line with the changed status rules.

A Statistical Study of Potential Roman Sites by Place Names

by cishanjia @ 2007-08-01 - 17:06:30

I have uploaded the findings of my 2004 study, A Statistical Study of Potential Roman Sites by Place Names. This minor study of Norfolk has a number of shortcomings, which I discuss in the study. It does, however, provide one of the first studies, in Norfolk at least, assessing claims of place name types statistically against known Roman roads. It also contains a link towards the bottom to a more recent, national study.
